Book Quote

``Sports?  Another waste of time!  North Korea is making war on South Korea and all these dummkopfs want to know is who won a ball game?  A man jumps up and tries to get the ball in a basket.  He takes a stick and hits the ball so it should go in whole in the ground.  He takes a fatter stick and tries to hit the ball far away.  He grabs a ball and runs with it and other men try to push him down.  A woman would never be so meshugge.  She sees a basket, she fills it with fruit.  She sees a hole she fills it up.  She sees a stick, she puts it someplace out of the way so nobody should trip or get poked in the eye.  Somebody tries to push her down, she calls a policeman"
The fantastic Jewish grandmother in "The Smartest Woman I Know" by Ilene Beckerman.

Snapping

Caitlyn:  Mama, can you snap?
Mama:  Yes I can.
Caitlyn:  How do you do it?
Mama:  You just put your thumb beside your middle finger and push.
Caitlyn tries a few times.
Caitlyn:  I guess I just don't have enough fingers!

The Facts of Life

Caitlyn: Grandpa, let’s play house.  You be the daddy and I’ll be the mommy and we’ll have a baby.
Grandpa: OK.
Caitlyn puts the doll down in the hallway and she and Grandpa sit on the couch.
Grandpa: So, Caitlyn, should we have a baby?
Caitlyn: Yes, but we’ll have lunch first and have the baby on Monday.
She serves a pretend sandwich.
Caitlyn: Now it’s Monday. Let’s go get the baby.
Grandpa and Caitlyn go and get  the baby. It’s a girl. Caitlyn names her Sally. Caitlyn puts Sally in the crib.
Caitlyn: Now we will have a nap.
Grandpa and Caitlyn nap for three seconds.
Caitlyn: Now I’m going to work.
